Low Carb Diet Induction Phase – Getting Ready!
Induction January 16th, 2009
Are You Ready to Cut Out Carbs?
If you are planning to take up a low carb lifestyle, or just want to lose a set amount of weight, you have probably seen that a very strict induction phase is required for the first 2 weeks. In fact, some people extend this phase for a month, or even longer, because they like the way they feel, and they want to speed up their fat loss.
The carbohydrate restriction is very strict, and we are limited to 20 grams a day. This will be quite a shock to people who are used to eating a typical western diet of 100 or more grams of carbs a day. So I think it is important to stock up on the right induction diet food to get started.
Stock Up On Low Carb Foods
For me it is very important to plan ahead for these first couple of weeks. After that, I get used to the diet, and I can be more impulsive about it. Here is what helps me stick to the induction phase. You might want to prepare these things the day before you start your diet.
- Prepared Salad – It really helps me to prepare a nice cruncy salad in a container. It usually lasts me 2 – 3 days, and I always have it on hand. Iceberg lettuce, cucumbers, and green peppers are good choices. Then make sure you have the allowed items on hand to make your salad satisfying. I like to keep some ba-cos, good cheese, and a variety of my favorite low carb salad dressing.
- Eggs – Scrambled, hard boiled or over easy – eggs are a low carb staple food. You will find that a couple of eggs in the morning will keep you satisfied until lunch. I like to scramble mine with a bit of cheese, butter, green peppers, onions and salsa. Do whatever you like. It might help you to hard boil a few eggs to keep for snacks.
- Sweets – During the first few days, you may be hit by some awful cravings for sweet. I always buy, and prepare, sugar free jello. You can also by whipped cream or Kool-whip because it is low in carbs. Jello and whipped cream seem to do the trick for me! I also buy stevia, a 0 carb sweetener, and keep some nice tea on hand. In the evening, when I get a carb craving, a cup of sweet tea really helps!
- Lean meat, chicken, and fish. I would suggest stocking up on tuna and mayo, because they go great on top of a green salad. Chicken or beef broth are very filling, low carb snacks too. Beyond that, make sure you have easy access to sources of qualify protein to keep your belly from feeling hungry.
- Cruncy Foods – Celery is awesome. It crunches in your mouth, and it can be used to scoop up a low carb dip!
We aren’t really allowed nuts during the induction phase, but sprinkling a handful on top of salad can provide a satisfying crunch. A half a dozen nuts won’t throw most of us out of ketosis, but only do it if you can keep from eating several handfuls after you get started.
As you continue with your low carb diet adventure, you will come up with your own tricks for sticking to the diet and dealing with cravings. If it takes you a couple of days to really warm up to low carb induction eating, that is fine.
